Ce roman épistolaire est considéré comme le premier ouvrage érotique anglais. Il relate sous forme de lettres les aventures de Fanny Hill, orpheline contrainte d'émigrer à Londres où elle se prostitue pour subvenir à ses besoins. L'ouvrage décrit avec plus ou moins de détails ses pirouettes sexuelles et les moeurs légères de Londres au XVIIIe siècle. John Cleland écrivit son roman entre novembre 1748 et février 1749 pendant son séjour en prison pour dettes. Quelques mois après sa sortie, les ligues de vertu lancent des pétitions contre le livre. Elles conduisent l'auteur, les éditeurs et l'imprimeur devant les tribunaux. Cleland doir renier son oeuvre, puis accepter son retrait du marché et sa destruction. Le roman reste interdit en Angleterre jusqu'en 1970 et aux États-Unis jusqu'en 1966. Cependant, dès sa parution, des copies pirates circulent sous le manteau. Finalement les seules parutions tolérées et illustrées le furent en Belgique et en France, où l'ouvrage fut redécouvert par Guillaume Apollinaire (l'auteur des onze mille verges), qui rédigea la préface de l'édition lue ici.
